Here is the press release....

Daniel Craig is Officially James Bond!
Source: Columbia Pictures, MGM October 14, 2005

It was announced today by producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc. and Sony Pictures Entertainment, that Daniel Craig has been cast in the role of the legendary British secret agent, James Bond, in the highly anticipated 007 adventure thriller Casino Royale.

Casino Royale reunites Wilson and Broccoli with Martin Campbell, who directed the 1995 Bond blockbuster GoldenEye. His most recent film, The Legend of Zorro, will be released on October 28, 2005.

Casino Royale will be the 21st James Bond film produced by the franchise holders, EON Productions. The MGM/Columbia Pictures production begins shooting in January and is due for release worldwide on November 17, 2006. It will be filmed in the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Italy and the UK.

Neal Purvis and Robert Wade wrote the screenplay based on famed author Ian Fleming's first novel. The script is currently being polished by Academy Award®-nominated writer, Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby).

Born in 1968, Daniel Craig was raised on the Wirral nr. Liverpool. He moved to London to join the National Youth Theatre at the age 17 and continued his training at the London Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Craig has since become regarded as one of Britain's finest actors securing a variety of roles in television, theatre and film.

He is currently filming a thriller alongside Nicole Kidman, The Visiting, and has two films in post-production; Steven Spielberg's Munich and Douglas McGrath's Every Word Is True, co-starring Sandra Bullock and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Recent film credits include Sam Mendes' The Road to Perdition, The Mother, Sylvia, and last year he received much critical acclaim for Matthew Vaughn's Layer Cake as well as Roger Michell's Enduring Love.

Wilson and Broccoli said "It has been a long time ambition for us to film the first book in the series, 'Casino Royale', which defined the complex character of James Bond. We are thrilled Daniel Craig will play the character of 007. Daniel is a superb actor who has all the qualities needed to bring a contemporary edge to the role. 'Casino Royale' will have all the action, suspense and espionage that our audiences have come to expect from us but nevertheless takes the franchise in a new and exciting direction."

"James Bond is a character without peer in motion picture history," said Pascal. "He is a household name recognized in virtually every corner of the globe and because of this renown, the casting of the new 007 takes on a special importance. We believe that in Daniel Craig we have found the ideal 21st century Bond and we couldn't be more privileged to be working with Barbara and Michael, who are tireless champions and guardians of the James Bond legacy."

Director Martin Campbell said, "The thing about James Bond is that each actor who has filled the role has brought his own style and imprint. With Daniel as our new Bond, I am thrilled to be returning to shepherd the new 007 in the new Bond adventure."

Dan Taylor, President of Metro Goldwyn Mayer Inc, said: "All of us here at MGM are delighted that Daniel Craig, an actor of such high-calibre, has been chosen to be the next Bond. We are also very excited to be working closely with Barbara and Michael again and with Columbia Pictures on 'Casino Royale', which we predict to be the biggest, best Bond ever."

I say NO! Pierce Bronson, Roger Moore and most definitely Sean Connery were great James Bonds. They were sexy and mysterious. Just looking into their eyes made you forget what problems were plaguing you in life. But this guy Daniel. No way! He isn't sexy, I mean he isn't a dog, but he doesn't have the air about him the other actors for the James Bond role did. I predict the movie may just flop.

CRAIG NO

It may be interesting to see how he portrays Bond, but he just doesn't seem very Bond-like. Sean Connery is my fave Bond.

I've never seen this Daniel Craig guy act, so I can't say either way, but I will admit he doesn't really look like a Bond.
I wonder if the producers wanted to go with a fairly unknown actor rather than any of the big names who were up for the part because of typecasting (both from before or as a result after...) I mean, Sean Connery, no matter what he does, will always be "Bond, James Bond"...
(and let's face it, will Pierce Brosnon ever get rid of Remington Steele? :) )

It's hard to say never having seen any of Daniel's acting. He doesn't look like Bond but his acting could make the difference. I guess I'll go with No for now.

Since I don't really know this Daniel actor, I'll withhold judgment at this time... However, I do believe that there will only be one TRUE Bond in my heart--Sean Connery. When you watch the original films, you about melt into your seat... He is truly one sexy Brit!! :)

(But I loved Pierce Brosnan as Remmington Steele. He just never was a great Bond IMO. He was slightly better than Timothy Dalton, though. George Lazenby I think did a good job with a not so hot script, but Roger Moore seemed asleep at the wheel in his later films.)

CRAIG NO

He is not my picture of James Bond! He's not sexy and doesn't have that classy feel to him. But, I will reserve final judgment though until I see the movie.

Daniel as James Bond? No way he just doesnt have it going on. I much prefer Sean Connery. Now there was James Bond material. He was to die for. I loved his accent. Pierce Brosnan and Timothy Dalton all made great James Bond characters but I definetely prefered Sean. Oh baby he was hot!! I wont be seeing this new movie when it comes out. I used to love watching the James Bond movies.

No if he's blonde like in Tomb Raider - yes maybe if he darkens his hair like the pic you've shown above.

I don't know. None of them have lived up to Sean Connery anyway so it doesn't really bother me.

I heard they told Pierce he was too old and he was really not expecting to get booted. Now BATMAN.. I LOVE the new Batman! See the new Batman had me drooling and suddenly I want MORE! I was hoping Bond would be like that!

I always thought way before they made Pierce Bronson, James Bond that he would be perfect for the role. Roger Moore, and Sean Connery were both great for the part too. I just can't see Daniel Craig as James Bond though. Doesn't fit the picture that goes along with the role.

I kinda like Daniel Craig. In any case, I'm going to keep an open mind and see the movie anyway because I'm a fan of the Bond franchise in general. I was disappointed when the let Brosnan go, and more so when they didn't choose another dark, smoldering actor to replace him, but I'm perfectly willing to wait and see how Craig does.

NO. But I also am trying to keep an open mind. I like Sean Connery best, although I'm also fond of Pierce Brosnan.

I've never seen Daniel Craig act before, but he is not want I picture James Band to look like. Give me Sean Connery or Pierce Brosnan any day or night. Adrian Paul would have made an awesome Bond. He's enough to make you turn into a puddle as well.

No! I haven't seen any movie that he has played in. I liked Pierce Brosnan for the role, but I don't think Craig fits the role.

Daniel Craig as Bond? No Way! When I saw a picture of him, I thought he was very unappealing looking! I could hardly believe that he was chosen as the new James Bond. He just is not what I think James Bond should look like. Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan just had that "sexy something" that made them so appealing to me. I think that if they had to replace Pierce Brosnan they could have chosen someone better. So no, I don't think I will want to see this film.
