How to get NOTHING done!

Why is it that when I most need to get something done, I go off on these mental tangeants?

Like last night--when I needed to get to work on the latest issue of my newsletter, Shara's E Zone, and write the free Just for Sizzle story that goes along with it--why at midnight was I sitting on the floor happily pouring through my books on magical herbs?

All these things to do before I go to bed--like write this blog--and I've pulled out a stack of books for reading!

And why--when I'm supposed to be dieting--does my friend show up on my doorstep with a bag full of Williamsburg cookies? (You know who you are!) But damn those cookies are good! And I have no freakin' willpower.

So why--when I have a blog, a newsletter and a short story needing to come out on the same day--do I wait until the last second to write them? Does anyone else have this last-second-itis? And usually the moment I settle on my chaise with the laptop fired up and the flash drive loaded, that's when my accident-prone dog suddenly decides she must go outside or else. Yeah, I know what the or else is. Or my dh will suddenly want to talk or my child will want me to play Sega. (And while I'm asking all these "why" questions do I continue to drown on Level 4?)

(It's now 3am EST, so I apologize if this makes no sense...)
Today though, if you take the time to post your best way to get NOTHING done, then you can win a copy of The Zodiac Series GEMINI. Knowing how to get nothing done is an amazingly useful skill, so I hope we all learn something here today.

At 2 am I managed to post the current issue of Shara's E Zone which, sometime today, will include the FREE Just for Sizzle story. And, sometime today, I promise to get my new giveaway up on my News Page. All of this can be found at http://www.sharalanel.com/.

Once I wake up and have coffee, I'll come on back and chat with you, and maybe I can dig up a sexy hunk picture or two. Now I'm off to catch some zzzzz's...

I think we all go off track from time to time. Sometimes its because we are not looking forward to a task or even because its easier or more entertaining to do that other thing your being distracted by.
My best way to get nothing done is to look busy by moving around but closing doors behind me so I can relax and not have people watching. I have moved boxes around while doing nothing, shuffled papers, tapped on the keyboard making nonsense on the screen, etc. If you sound like your doing somethiing, people usually do not check on you. And if the door is closed, they rely more on sound and not sight. Not that I have used this method much but hey, we are all sneaky in our own ways. I usually try to assuage my guilt by telling myself I will work harder after my break....or the next day. Which I do.

Hi Shara, I find the best way to do nothing is to be online. There're always emails to attend to, blogs to visit, movie trailers to watch, new books and authors to add to my wish list, and many other places to window shop.

Hi Shara! Wish I was in Richmond. *G* It's snowing here with gale force winds. The way I get nothing done is to say out loud, the night before, all the things I want to do the next day and then don't do them. I try to micromanage and then when things don't work out the way I planned I have a meltdown. Next time I come to VA I wanna meet you. Might be in early Feb. *BG*

Blogging. It is absolutely the best way to get nothing done.

It took me a long time to be able to admit this, but my therapist says I need to announce it everywhere I go. So...

I. Am. A. Blog-whore.

(Just kidding about the therapist. Not saying I don't need one, just that I don't have one.)

April, sneakiness can be a useful quality *g* It helped me read many a novel while at work. Now I work for myself, so it's not quite as helpful.

Jenny and Sherrill, yes blogs and other online activities are an excellent way to do nothing--I'm proud of you for being so skilled!

Mel, I totally relate to the micromanaging meltdown. This happens to me often. Let me know when you visit Richmond. I'm quite pleased with winter so far. Zero snow, days in the sixties. Very nice, though last night we did have your wind.

I don't want to get nothing done. I want to work half the time and make twice the money.

Sit on the couch and watch tv all day. That is a good way to get nothing done. Reading is another way. I always wait till the last minute to do something. Bad habit.

I'm going one step further than Sherrill: I'm a Blog Crack Addict Whore. There's a reason why I cut down to posting 3 times a week. Oh sure, that doesn't stop me from commenting 7 days a week. I tried to go without comments on my blog. That lasted one day. I need the love.

Funnily enough once I cut down my blog whoring around, I started to write. Hmmm...

But yes - blogs are dangerous. Dan-ger-ous.

I'm thinking we need a Blogs Anonymous (BA, much better than BS). Oh, TV's a good one! Like the day I watched 5 episodes of Smallville in a row, because they finally aired the one I'd been missing. Since Richmond doesn't have a WB affiliate, they air the new shows in the middle of the night--thank god for Tivo.

Well said, Darragha! And I'm all for bribing children. Of course I'm also for hefty deductions when cooperation goes down the tubes (like refusing to turn off Sega when it's dinner time).

Hi Shara,

In order to get NOTHING done you must do nothing ~grinz~. See in my opinion, "sitting on the floor happily pouring through my books on magical herbs" is doing something. Maybe not what you'd planned, but in the grand scheme of things, it's better than sitting on the couch with your brain empty, doing nothing at all.

Although, there is something to be said for sitting on the couch with your brain empty, doing nothing at all, however, also in my opinion, very few of us are capable of actually succeeding at doing 'NOTHING'.

Wow, did I even answer your original question? I'm lost, sorry. Before I signed on I was doing 'nothing' LOL...

I agree with darragha. But I am very lucky to have a boss at work that is I am not doing anything he doesn't expect to find something to do. He lets me read or whatever lol

Hi, Shara!

Email is the easiest way to distract me. Send me a message and I'll stop writing to read and answer.

Or a good book. I've been known to order pizza for dinner because I was too involved reading to cook.

Michelle, you're right. The magical herbs stuff actually went into my newsletter, but it certainly wasn't the most efficient way to tackle my To Do list.

Dee, email is a total distraction for me, too, but it makes the solitary process of writing more bearable.

I've finally got my FREE Just for Sizzle story posted. To find the link, you can subscribe to my newsletter:

This was a departure for me. It's sci-fi and it's a serial, so I think writing the next segments is going to be a lot of fun.

Hey Sharal I wished I was you sitting on the floor going through all those books. LOL. I love to do that, pet my books, ROFL.
But seriously you know what I do, I go to my bedroom and close the door and before I go in there, I tell everyone that room is off limits unless I ask them to come in. I don't know if you have a room just for your writing, but sounds like you have one that is distracting. I go to my room that is simple, with my laptop and catching up on my loops, or just taking that time to read something I keep getting bugged around and can't read it, or rather worse is that I go online and buy books or put them in my basket LOL.
Really two things:
1) I suggest a place to go without lots around to tempt you, books, dogs, etc
2) That you go there with a goal in mind and stick with it.
When you are done, reward yourself, eat the chocolate, pet your books, play those computer games.
Now I just need to follow this advice better!

Shara--

I didn't use to have this problem of having to do things at the last minute, but lately life has intruded. Like for the last 6 months.

My New Year's Resolution (which of course dooms it to failing) was to get back on top of things and revert back the super-organized woman I was in April 2005 and before. Sigh. Not gonna happen.

I'm a Boomer with aging parents, a husband with Type I diabetes that is only going to get worse with age, and a college-age son who thinks going to school should be all about fun.

So, I just take each day at a time and do things when they need to be done.

Bec, I love cooking shows! I keep Food Network on in the background if I'm eating, so I can pretend my Lucky Charms are gourmet food.

Cathie, that's why we moved south ;-) I feel for you! And petting books or rearranging books is one of my fave pasttimes, and yes I actually read them too.
