Woman's Best Friend
No, not THAT! I'm talking about our little furry friends who adore us, our pets. I've always had a pet, mostly cats. There's just something about having an animal crawl in your lap while you're writing or curling up next to you while you watch TV.
My household is home to my 7 year old Russian Blue, Eddie Munster. Eddie is so named because as a kitten, he was a real monster, always jumping on his sisters and irritating them. In fact, he ran his sisters out of the house. But he was just a guy and all he wanted to do was play. He's the smartest cat. He knows exactly how to get what he wants around this house, mainly food. And he sleeps curled up against my stomach, especially now that it's cold and rainy outside.
And of course, there's my adorable dog Star. She's a 6 year old Norwegian Elkhound. Think Husky but half the size. She's got those soulful brown eyes that look up at you pleadingly when you're trying to eat dinner. And she has to get up on the couch and lie next to me, on the other side from Eddie. She also has to sleep in the middle, between my husband and I, and I have to pet her for fifteen minutes before she'll go to sleep. I will admit that Star is a bit neurotic. But then if I had a normal dog, I would feel...normal. She afraid of cars, people walking, dogs walking, the UPS man and has to hide in the bushes or sit down when one passes while we're walking. But there is a secret to getting past her fear. Give her a dog biscuit! Dogs are so easy.
Eddie and Star do get along, sometimes sleeping next to each other. And sometimes Eddie likes to jump on Star's back when he's in a playful mood.
I like to use animals in my books to express certain things. In the Max series (writing as JB Skully) my heroine has a little stray black cat that sits outside her window and wants to be fed. She calls it Buzzard (I did have a cat named Buzzard, just in case you thought I made that up) and refuses to let it in. I use her growing attachment to that cat to symbolize Max's re-entry into the world. In my July 2006 Jasmine Haynes release, Somebody's Lover from Berkley, I also use animals to make a point. One of my heroine's has a dog whom she trusts more than men because "dogs love you just the way you are and don't sneak out of the bed in the middle of the night."
I'd love to hear about your pets! So chime in. At 9:00 PM Pacific time, I'll choose an email from the non-LSB participants in the discussion and you win a free download of Jasmine Haynes's More Than A Night. So join in and let me hear about your pets! Come on, I know all you animal lovers want to talk about your pets. And if you don't have a pet, feel free to say whatever you want!

I once had a 22-pound orange tabby named Shadrach that was a real lover. And I think he thought he was a dog. (He was certainly big enough to be one!) He met me at the door when I got home from work, and loved french fries. And he liked to sleep on the pillow up against my head. Had to chew on my hair for a bit before he'd go to sleep. Got along fairly well with the dog, Bear, who was a dalmation mix. Nothing funnier than seeing a cat chase a dog.
Is there anyone here who hasn't read about my adorable (spoiled) poodle, Ginger? If so, you must be new to the LSB community because I often post photos of her to my website and SiN forums. I'm certain I've bored everyone to tears!
The funny thing is, Ginger's my first dog ... ever! I had no plans to get a dog, thought people who talked baby talk to their dogs were ridiculous, and had no intention in this lifetime of picking up dog poop with a plastic glove! Horrors!
I've had to eat my words and then some *LOL*. Skully, I was with you when your DH got Star, remember? We were sharing a room at RWA national conference. You were apprehensive, to say the least, but appear to have gotten over it.
These dogs have a way of wrapping our hearts around their paws and firmly tugging.
Nessie the dog convert *g*
We don't have room for pets now but when we kept goldfishes at one time and I love to see them swimming in the tank.
Since I combined my household with my mother, I have 4 dogs and two cats.
We call if Mutual of Omaha here. LOL
But I love the little yaps :)
hiya skully,
i have a miniture american eskimo and my son has a husky/mutt. both are spoiled and drive me crazy, but i love them.
we also have a 55 gallon fish tank in the living room. it's in the living room because my son claimed he couldn't sleep with the noise of the filters and blowers, so we moved it from his room. now my son sleeps on the couch!

I have Kitty-Girl. She was born 4/5/89. The same day my dog died, my 28th birthday and the same day as I chanted to the Dai-Gohonzon in Japan. When she was about 6 weeks old, my cat, "Eddie" died. He hung himself on the venetian blinds. He died in my arms, purring. My ex-husband felt so bad that my cat had died, that he brought me three kitties. I chose the runt of the litter. I've had her ever since. She's the only good thing I got out of that first marriage...
Kitty-Girl sits on my shoulder while I write. She comes to me when I sing. When I had a baby, she watched that little girl like a great protector, and still comes running whenever DD cries (she's 13.5 now).
I know that some morning I'll awaken to find a cold, stiff cat on my chest (she sleeps atop me)--but Kitty-Girl and I will always be together.
We recently had to put down our Red Bone Hound dog, as she got mean and started biting. Very sad. She was a good old dog. Over the years I've raised exotic mice (long, curly hair) and had a job wherein one of my duties was to handle the bats, snakes, mice, cockroaches and lizards. I was a Science Specialist at a high school :)
I am owned by a male, Siamese cat named, Damian. He has been with me for some 20+ years and he is the love of my life. A real Momma's boy he gets in my arms at night to play nose bites, kisses and hugs. Then, he sleeps on my legs or feet. Protecting me from all the booger bears in the darkness. I don't know what I'd do without him and I'm so thankful he's with me now. As I type he's asleep on his blanky in the computer room. He's the only man I've ever been able to count on to be there, never lie, cheat or leave me for another person. Although, he does have a penchant for black female kitties. He is my guardian angel, my best friend and he owns my heart.
I had a cat. For three months. I was fostering from a local shelter as I contemplated whether I was a cat person. I am not a cat person. I will visit with a cat but scooping the poop isn't for me.
I had just moved into my condo when Missy came to visit. First: she would wake me up, every day at 4 in the morning as she dug the ever-loving hell out of my duvet cover without ravaging it (good kitty) but this included leaping and landing on my chest (not so good kitty.+ One day I woke up and watched. The patterns on my cover were little petals. If I moved she thought they were bugs. Good god.
Another time I woke up as she was all "mrow-mrow-mrow". She sat before the fan and was giving it hell. Yeah, baby, you tell that oscilatting fan who's the boss.
She went back and was permanently adopted a few months later.
Someone recommended fish but if it doesn't make a sound I'll forget to feed it. So, I have no pets. Probably a good thing.
I grew up with a cairn terrier, Misha, who was a freaking lunatic (she fit in very well). We got her from the humane society and she was beaten. This teeny, tiny bug of a dog. Bastards. Every time it thundered, she'd be found under my bed (mine was the only one that didn't rest on the floor.) Once I was home alone with a monster of a storm came. Mom came home to find both me and the dog under the bed. Me armed with a flashlight and a book. Man, I miss that dog.
I won't even mentioned the stupid hamster that we had. One night in my room and it was moved out. Stupid nocturnal animals.
Hi everyone! Hope you all had a great christmas and a happy new year!
Currently, we have one dog, Bonney, a lab cross with something like a whippit or greyhound. Well, technically she's a bitch, but one of the most intelligent creatures you'd ever think to meet. Anything we eat, she'll eat. In fact, she'll demand! Corn flakes on toast for breakfast, anything and everything else throughout the day.
If she wants a goodie she tells you. For a chewy (chew stick, various coulrs, don't have a clue what's in them)she'll SNEEZE and sit outside the pantry door. If she wants one of her eclairs she sits under the cupboard where they are kept. She knows that at 9pm and 11pm she is to go outside and 'use the facilities' then gets rewarded with a sweet - even if she does nothing. I swaer she can read the time, cause when those times come around she creates a stir, barking and jumping around, telling us it's time for a trip outdoors and a sweet. At these times, she rushes back into the room to await the sweet, rather than waiting by the cupboard to get one. If we hold back on the sweet or pretend it's for us, she tells us off! She goes mad!
She's jealous of me, any time i go near the man of the house she keeps an eagle eye on me, and if i dare to hug him she goes burserk!!!!! She is so funny she has us in stictches. She makes a useless guard dog. Any one who comes into the house she greets then turns on her back, wanting her belly rubbed! Everyone has got to fuss her, even first thing in the morning, or they get told off! She is simply amazing and almost human. I could say so much more but this message is bulky as it is *grin*. She's daft as a brush and we all love her to bits!
I have a yorkshire terrier named Abby. I got her from my aunt. My aunt was going to give her away because she was sick and couldn't take care of her. I told her that I would take her. Abby is a very good watch dog. We have to watch her when people come in the house. She tries to attack them when they leave. We also have five cats. The cats stay outside. We also just got another dog. It is a 11 month old poodle. It is still very shy. We have had it for about two weeks.
The boardroom scene! Oh, yes, Skully, loved that one. In fact, MORE THAN A NIGHT is one of my favorite erotica romances, definitely a "keeper."
Yes, I'm owned by Ginger and here is a link to her picture: http://vanessahart.com/poodle.htm
Proud mama Nessie
We just adopted the cutest tabby last Friday who we've named Gambit. He's definitely a lover and can't get enough attention. Loves to have his head scratched and rubbed.
Hey, Skully!
I wonder why you might have a dog with a Viking heritage, hmm?
We haven't had animals since we drove truck--which has been a mighty log time ago. But we had a little black half-Siamese before that, and she ruled the house completely. We were such suckers for that cat!
DH grew up with Siamese and Shelties living side by side and the stories he can tell!! We had Beagles because my dad hunted. They're sweet little things!
I'm looking forward to Somebody's Lover!

I am owned by a black and tan, miniature dachshund named Barkley. He's 7....and if you have ever seen those plaques that say
Spoiled Dog Lives Here then you know his majesty...ummm...my dog.
Hi Skully!! I've met Eddie Munster! Did I meet Buzzard, too? I know you had two cats when we visited.
We also have cats. Two of 'em. Oliver (for the Disney movie Oliver & Company) is a huge part Maine Coon, part Tabby cat. He's old, almost 16 years and his tummy is starting to drag the ground. He is a middle-of-the-night yowler, so he gets to sleep in the basement. He tries to sit on my lap but can't get his butt off the ground and into the chair.
Now Pidge (short for Pidgewidgeon) is a darling black and white cat, approximately 2 years old.
Someone abandoned her (boo-hiss to those nasty people! but lucky for us!!) two years ago in sub-zero weather. Pidge climbed into our tree and let Tom know she needed rescuing when he went to the mailbox. He brought her in and once we determined no one would claim her, she became ours. She is my lap cat. What a cute little ball of fur she is, too!
When I write, Pidge sits on my desk and watches me, when she isn't sleeping or grooming.

We had a marmalade tabby named Tiger for 15 years. He passed away two weeks before his birthday. My kids were really sad because we had him since he was a tiny kitten. He was the best cat! When my four kids were little, he would let them do anything to him without biting or scratching. After he died, I said I didn't want any more pets, but one day one of my daughters brought a new 8 week old kitty home from the pound. She was sooo cute! Since my daughter loves vampire books like her momma, she named her Scarlet. On Scarlet's chin she has two small stripes of fur that look like fangs. It's so funny looking! Scarlet loves to hook her claws into the wooden ledge on the front door whenever anyone goes out so she can see where you are going. She just hangs there until you come back in! Now I can't imagine what it would be like without her!
we have a pet snake named gambit and a beta fish named sapphire. My fav is the snake.
Pam, she almost bit the UPS man when he was leaving. Now everytime he delivers a package he asks if I have the maneater put up.
